Hosted, On-site Unified Communications Both Provide Advantages

Businesses are utilizing unified communications more often than ever before as demands for next-generation fax, phone and messaging services continue rising. However, deciding between hosted and on-premise UC is one of today's most common deliberations, according to an IT News Africa report by telecommunications expert Bennie Langenhoven.

Cloud-based unified communications can reduce IT costs by eliminating the need to maintain premise-based systems and promising companies low, predictable monthly bills. Additionally, organizations will automatically receive updates to their cloud-based phone and fax service, allowing IT departments to focus on more goal-oriented tasks, Langenhoven asserted.

Premise-based unified communications, on the other hand, offers its own set of advantages. That includes greater customization capabilities, as IT staff can add or remove individual applications more easily. Traditional unified communications may also be easier to manage, Langenhoven asserted, as some companies prefer well-trained staff and their own infrastructure.

According to an eWeek report, hosted and premise-based unified communications make smaller organizations much more competitive with larger firms, as the combination of VoIP, presence and online fax from computer were traditionally only available to larger companies. As a result, businesses using unified communications can remain relevant in today's unpredictable economy, whether they choose to host the solutions or not.
